The Cub Foods Store at 1600 N. Knoxville is slated for closure in mid-March, according to sources.

A company spokesman did not respond to a request by the Peoria Times-Observer at 1:04 p.m. for verification and further comment.

A company spokesperson would say only a statement would be faxed to the local media later this afternoon.

The company Web site said the company has been in operation since 1968.

Cub Foods currently operates 76 stores in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois & Iowa, with 56 of those stores located in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area.

UPDATE: "In light of a difficult economic environment, Cub Foods has evaluated its stores and identified opportunities to strengthen its overall business. While the decision to close a store is always difficult — given the impact on associates and customers — it is guided by what is best for the company's ongoing success and future growth," the company said in a press release.

There are no plans to close the store in the Glen Hollow Shopping Center.
