Project manager Janet Czech explains some points about the new emergency department being constructed as part of the Milestone Project at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.

Peoria’s news media received a sneak peek at the first three floors of the eight-floor Milestone Project at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center today.

The $280 million project covers 440,000 square feet.

The project right now is to the point of being dry walled in some places. In other areas it is a mass of steel, concrete and wiring.

This project is exciting for Sue Wozniak, chief operating officer for OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.

In brief remarks before the tour Wozniak said the project right now is employing 400 construction workers.

And, it is fully funded.

“We were very fortunate we secured our financing before the downturn,” Wozniak said. “This project is going forward to completion. We will see our first patient here within a year.”

Wozniak said one of the over-riding desires with the project was to provide ease of access and an emphasis on family.

Wozniak said some highlights the project will have are:

• the new emergency department will have 55 rooms, compared to the current 19

• the emergency department is being set up in a pod arrangement, and a pod can be isolated if needed

• the new surgery area will have private recovery rooms.

• the maternity area will employ a state-of-the-art infant monitoring system.
