Raja Krishnamoorthi made a trip to his parents North Peoria home yesterday to make an announcement he plans to make a run for the Democratic nomination for Illinois Comptroller.

“People downstate need to know I am one of them,” Krishnamoorthi said.

The former Richwoods High School valedictorian and former Illinois Deputy Treasurer was introduced to the media by State Sen. Dave Koehler (D-Peoria) The current comptroller Dan Hynes (D) plans a run for governor.

A win would make Krishnamoorthi, 36, of Hoffman Estates the first Asian-American elected to statewide office.

The candidate joked he has a lot of work ahead to get attention. “Krishnamoorthi is not exactly a household name,” he said.

Krishnamoorthi said he is running because state government is broken.

“It’s time we fix it,” he said.

Corruption and a lack of transparency in state government was the theme Krishnamoorthi built his comments around.

“Here in Peoria people play by the rules and expect their government to do the same,” Krishnamoorthi said. “Their hopes have been dashed time and time and time again ... Good government does not have to be an oxymoron.”

Krishnamoorthi said with the right elected officials Illinoisans can set aside their cynicism of government. He said Illinois needs candidates who view political office as a public service, not as a friends and family plan.

“Illinois can do better and we must,” he said. “Illinois is ready for reform.”

Krishnamoorthi, 36, is no stranger to politics. He served on President Barack Obama’s senatorial campaign in 2004. He also worked in Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan's office.

Krishnamoorthi said he plan to follow the president’s example.

“(Obama is) committed to good government in a way we need in Illinois,” he said.
