The American Legion Department of Illinois is the most recent organization to endorse Veteran’s Funeral Care as a benefit for retired veterans and their families.  VFC serves to provide veterans with funeral benefits deserving of their patriotic service. There are currently 10 funeral homes certified to offer these benefits in Illinois, and others in bordering states that serve Illinois counties.

“Our veterans have earned a very special honor for their service to our country, and that honor should be carried out to their final resting place,” VFC President Jim Rudolph said.  “Funeral homes that are certified to offer Veterans Funeral Care services work to compassionately and respectfully assist families of deceased veterans and we are pleased the American Legion Department of Illinois has recognized the benefits of all that VFC has to offer.”

The endorsement in Illinois comes shortly after the Indiana American Legion announced their support for the program.  The Illinois office serves more than 105,000 members in over 800 local Posts.

“The American Legion serves as a support organization for the men and women and their families who have served our country as part of the armed forces.  Since 1920, our members have served in at least one or more of a dozen wars around the world.  We are happy to support services like Veterans Funeral Care that are created to give back to and honor our veterans,” American Legion Illinois Adjutant Terry Woodburn said.

Eligible veterans, their spouses and dependent children are entitled to free grave space, outer burial container, opening and closing of the grave, perpetual care and cemetery marker or headstone at a National Cemetery. VFC providers ensure veterans are aware of what programs are available to them and assist them to develop a plan for the future.

Veterans Funeral Care services will typically save a family 40 percent of the cost of using a traditional funeral service. The provider network is made up of licensed funeral directors, many of them veterans themselves.

“We take great pride in providing services to our Veterans and their families. Our staff takes care of every one of our Veterans and their families with the respect and dignity they have earned,” Hinchliff-Pearson-West Director David Pearson said.
