Lt. Governor Sheila Simon is asking rural elected officials, leaders and citizens to attend the first in a statewide series of “rural listening posts” on Tuesday in Peoria. Participants will be asked to rank the importance of the challenges rural communities face and develop ideas on what can be done to overcome those obstacles.

The listening posts are hosted by the Governor’s Rural Affairs Council, which Simon chairs, and the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs at Western Illinois University. Feedback from the listening posts will form the basis of a strategic plan for the council called the Vision for Rural Illinois. This plan will contain specific policy recommendations and action items for the council’s member agencies.

On Wednesday, Simon will give the opening address at the 23rd Annual Rural Community Economic Development Conference hosted by the IIRA and the Rural Affairs Council. She will discuss the state of the rural economy and how to bring economic development to rural communities.
