Hobo quilts featured at meeting

Debbie Henninger will give a demonstration of the hobo quilt block designs she has created at the Woodford County Sewing Guild meeting at 7 p.m. March 15 at the Farm Bureau Building Auditorium, 117 W. Center, Eureka. The event is free and open to the public.

In days of yore when hobos roamed the countryside, they established a set of symbols they could scratch into the gates and fences of homesteads to alert future hobos of the welcome they would receive at that house.

Henninger has researched the highly stylized symbols and has developed quilt patterns from them which she has used to make “hobo quilts.” In addition, she has written a book which includes over 55 blocks based on the language.
