Eureka coach has change of heart
When I interviewed Eureka High School girls track coach Don Samford on Thursday, he was quite optimistic about the upcoming season.
However, Samford’s mood changed when he sent me an e-mail over the weekend to tell me that senior sprinter Elly Vance had quit the team to focus on work and FFA.
“We just can’t replace her speed,” Samford said.
He said her departure greatly reduces the chances for a state medal in the 4X100 and 4X200 relays, two events the Hornets were counting on winning at the state finals this spring.
Natalie Puent graduated, which already left one spot open on both those relays.
Shelby Kuperschmid and Kalla Gold are still part of the 4X100. Kupferschmid and Jacey Hartman are back in the 4X200. But, without Vance, Samford aid he is not sure if those two relays will make it to the state final medal stand.
