Woman assualted in Peoria County
A Chillicothe woman was abducted Sunday night from the Kroger parking lot, 603 N. Fourth St., and sexually assaulted while her infant daughter was in the car.
According to Capt. Dave Briggs of the Peoria County Sheriff’s Department, the 37-year-old woman was at Kroger about 10:30 p.m. putting groceries into her car when a white male in his 20s forced his way into the car and drove to a rural Peoria County area, where he assaulted her.
Briggs said the man then had her return to the Kroger parking lot area, where he fled.
The victim drove away from the parking lot and notified Chillicothe police.
The child was not harmed during the attack.
“This is a well-lit area,” said Briggs, “but people still need to be aware of their surroundings.”
Chillicothe police chief Steve Maurer said the department is looking at people who have been arrested in the Chillicothe and Peoria are who have a history of this type of crime or have been arrested for abduction and/or sexual assault.
“Chillicothe police are stepping up patrols,” said Maurer, “and Kroger is implementing better security measures.
“You’d like to thing something like this would never happen in your community, but it has, and people need to be aware and take extra precaution,” he said.
Maurer is asking that anyone who was shopping at Kroger about 10 to 11 p.m. Sunday or driving by, or who observed a white male in the parking lot call CrimeWatch at 274-4300, CrimeStoppers at 673-9000, the Chillicothe Police Department at 274-2129 or the Peoria County Sheriff’s Department at 697-7822.
