Metamora uses money for various programs
The Metamora Police Department uses its drug forfeiture fund account money for a variety of anti-drug programs in the community.
Out of the five expenditures from Aug. 1, 2011-July 30, 2012, three of the expenditures went to Commerce Bank to pay for the credit card used to purchase various items used for events.
Two of the biggest expenditures, though, went to the Woodford County Explorers and Positive Promotions.
The Woodford County Explorers program, which received $150 from the department last year, is a group of volunteer teenagers in the county that help patrol parades and area events.
“To me, it’s a group of kids that are positive about staying away from alcohol, drugs and crime,” Metamora Police Chief Mike Todd said. “So, when they come over and assist us with some of the events that we do over here, we make a donation to help keep that group funded and on the street.”
The other expenditure, $150.95 to Positive Promotions, is to get 500 Halloween bags to give to St. Mary’s and Metamora Grade School students.
“When we hand them out, we do a presentation where we’ll do a safety talk just to not eat any candy while you’re out on the street. It’s another type of safety and drug awareness-type thing,” Todd said.
Each bag is imprinted with a positive message.
In the past, Todd said that the money has been used on bigger purchases, such as video cameras for the police cars or updated radar equipment. It just depends on how much money the department brings in from drug forfeitures.
“It can vary drastically. It just depends on what type of year we have with DUIs. Last year was fairly active, this year it’s been pretty light.
From Aug. 1, 2011-July 30, 2012, the department brought in $3,758.01.
In the future, Todd said he hopes to eventually add a K-9 unit to the department.
“Every year, that goal seems to keep getting farther away than closer,” he said. “But, I definitely think that would be a positive for this community. That’s my hope someday.”
