Obituary: William Belshaw, 72, Metamora

William B. “Bill” Belshaw, 72, of Metamora, died at 11:47 p.m. Thursday, April 12, 2012, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Born Dec. 27, 1939, in Chicago to William L. and Elizabeth J. (Ehringer) Belshaw, he married Marjorie J. Obert on Aug. 30, 1958, in Metamora. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Bill (Donna) Belshaw of Washington; one son-in-law, Ken (the late Sheree) Halvachs of Fairview Heights,; two grandchildren; two brothers, Barry (Carol) Belshaw of Dunlap and Brad (Roxanna) Belshaw of Peoria; a sister, Roberta (Alan) Hahn of Washington; and many nieces and nephews.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1956 to 1962, and was a manufacturing supervisor, working for Caterpillar Inc. at the chemical processing plant in Mossville for 39 years, retiring in 2001.

He was village president of Metamora for two years to the present, and was a Village Board trustee for four years prior.

He was a Metamora chief of police for 21 years, a past president of Old Settlers Association and a board member of the Continental Hockey League, working with longtime friend Mark Olson to bring professional hockey to Peoria’s Logan Ice Dome in the 1970s. He also was a longtime Ducks Unlimited sponsor.

A funeral Mass was Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Metamora, where the Rev. Don Roszkowski officiated. Rosary was Sunday, with visitation following at Mason Funeral Home Metamora Chapel. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
