Obituary: John Efaw, 73, Metamora

John Dale Efaw, 73, of Metamora, formerly of Peoria, died the evening of Monday, April 23, 2012, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Born Sept. 23, 1938, in Beardstown to Edgar “Riley” and Ida “Vi” (Brown) Efaw, he married Rose M. (Schwerm) Efaw in December 1970. She survives.

He is also survived by his three children, James D. Efaw of Metamora, Jennifer A. Donovan of Eureka and Theresa J. (Andrew) Symmonds of Metamora; and by his six grandchildren.

He graduated from East Peoria Community High School in 1956 and Bradley University in 1967, with a B.A. in German.

He served as a radioman in the Navy from 1958 to 1962.

He was a police officer on several police departments, including Bartonville in the 1960s, Cook County Sheriff’s Police, Sangamon County as chief detective and Pana and Beardstown as chief of police. He also was a guard for Methodist Hospital.

He was a member of the American Legion and Mensa.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at The Wilton Mortuary, 2101 N. Knoxville Ave., Peoria. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 27, at Oakwood Cemetery on Coal Bank Road in Metamora.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice .
