Obituary: DeWayne Bartels, 53, of Peoria

PEORIA ~ DeWayne Clinton Bartels, 53, of Peoria, passed away at 6:05 a.m. Friday, July 27, 2012, at his home.

Born Sept. 26, 1958, in Pekin to Clifford Clinton and Virginia Mae (Rains) Bartels, he married Melody Ann Switzer on May 24, 1980, in Pekin.  She survives.

Also surviving are four sons, Wesley Bartels, Bailey Bartels, and Dylan Bartels, all of Peoria, and Dustin (Nicole) Bartels of Greencastle, Ind.; one daughter, Brandy Bartels of Bartonville; 14 grandchildren; and one brother, Steven (Barbara) Bartels of Pekin.

His parents preceded him in death.

DeWayne was the editor and also a writer and reporter for the East Peoria Times-Courier.  During his career of journalism, he also had worked for the Woodford Times, Peoria Times-Observer, Pekin Daily Times, Tazewell Publishing, and Kewanee Cost-Cutter.  Previously, he had worked for Morton Buildings for three years.

He was a member of the Illinois Press Association, the Peoria Astronomical Society, and was an ambassador in the NASA Solar System Ambassadors Program. He had received numerous awards over the years for his writing.

DeWayne enjoyed hiking, astronomy, and treasured the time spent with his family.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory, 500 N. 4th St. in Pekin. The Rev. Scott Christensen will officiate.  Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Prairie Haven Cemetery in Pekin.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made the Bartels Children’s Education Fund in care of the funeral home.
