Obituary: Ronald G. Kirkwood, 81, Germantown Hills

Ronald G. Kirkwood, age 81, of Germantown Hills, died on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012, at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria.

Born Oct. 2, 1930, in Bloomington to Frank and Ferne (Weldy) Kirkwood. He married Suellen Carter on Oct. 11, 1984, in Peoria. She survives.

Also surviving are his children, David (Rita) Kirkwood and Steven Kirkwood, both of Bloomington; stepson, Jeff (Shanda) Carter of Peoria; stepdaughter, Lisa Lucas of Germantown Hills; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Richard.

He was a graduate of Bluffton College in Ohio and received his master’s degree from Ohio State University. He served three years with the Mennonite Central Committee and two years with the World Council of Churches in Europe and the Middle East.

He worked several years in various school districts in Indiana and Ohio before coming to Illinois in 1967 for an opening at Illinois Central College, where he taught until 2009.

He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Peoria, where he sang in the choir, and a member of Peoria World Affairs Council.

Cremation rites have been accorded, with a memorial service at Westminster Presbyterian Church at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ronald G. Kirkwood English Scholarship at ICC, Illinois Shakespeare Festival at ISU, Peoria Bach Festival at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Peoria or any animal welfare agency of the donor’s choice.
