Bringing home the GOLD!
Eureka High School junior Kalla Gold won her second straight state title and broke a school record in the 400-meter dash Saturday at the state finals at Eastern Illinois University, and the Hornets won their second straight third place trophy. Gold also anchored the first place 4X400 relay (with senior Natalie Puent, junior Shelby Kupferschmid and junior Jacey Hartman). Gold won a medal (fifth place) in the 100-meter dash and was part of the 4X100 meter relay team that took second place (with Kupferschmid, junior Elly Vance and Puent). Kupferschmid won a medal (sixth) in the triple jump. It was the fifth state trophy for the Hornets, which is tied for the most all time in the history of Class 1A track and field. Eureka’s school record time of 3:56.98 in the 4X400 relay missed Freeburg’s 2005 state record by eight hundredths of a second. Eureka’s times in the 4X100 and 4X200 (Kupferschmid, Vance, Hartman and Puent) relays were also school records. See the June 1 edition of the Woodford Times for a tribute to the Eureka team with more photos and interviews with athletes and coach Don Samford.
