The Eureka High School girls basketball team defeated previously undefeated El Paso-Gridley, 57-53, Tuesday night in Knoxville to advance to the Sectional title game Thursday against Sherrard.
Senior guard Kalla Gold scored a game-high 28 points to lead the Hornets to their 20th win in their last 21 games.
Eureka opened a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter, but EP-G (28-1) rallied back to cut it to two points with 1:59 left.
Eureka junior Michaela Balducci answered with a fast break layup and a converted free throw. After an El Paso turnover, Balducci made another shot to make it 55-48 with 1:18 left.
“We didn’t want to slow the game down at the end,” said Eureka coach Jerry Prina. “We wanted to keep attacking.”
Gold scored eight of her points in the fourth quarter, including a three-point play after El Paso had gotten to within three points with 3:28 left.
“Gold is a great player,” said El Paso coach Kyle Bobbitt. “We worked all week (in practice) on trying to stop her, but she took over.”
