Eureka swimming wins nine

The Eureka College swimming & diving team opened its 2012-13 season Saturday afternoon, earning nine event victories in a dual meet versus Knox at Lay Natatorium in Galesburg. Junior Zach Ahrends (Graymont/Pontiac H.S.) won two events for the visitors, including a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Ahrends's time of 1:12.35 beat runner-up Nick Polizos of Knox by more than six full seconds. Ahrends also won the 50-yard breaststroke in a time of 31.69 seconds. The Red Devils also received victories on the men's side from Colton Lott (Ada, Okla./Ada H.S.) in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle and Cody Leach (Pontiac/Pontiac H.S.) in the 50-yard backstroke.

On the women's side, Makayla Thompson (Findlay/Okaw Valley H.S.), Kate West (Louisville, Ky./Assumption H.S.) and Elizabeth Horning (Washington/Notre Dame H.S.) each earned individual victories. Thompson's time of 1:06.46 won the 100-yard backstroke, while she also won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:23.44. West won the 50-yard butterfly in 30.44 seconds and Horning claimed a victory in the 50-yard breaststroke in 39.38 seconds.

Eureka will resume competition in the pool next Saturday at the Monmouth Invitational, scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
