Eureka swimming keeps the wins rolling
Eureka College freshman Makayla Thompson (Findlay/Okaw Valley H.S.) bested 22 other swimmers to win the 200-yard backstroke, while junior Cody Leach (Pontiac/Pontiac H.S.) earned a victory in 1-meter diving, pacing the Red Devils Saturday afternoon at the Monmouth Invitational at Pepper Natatorium in Monmouth.
Thompson's winning time of 2:22.67 in the 200-yard backstroke was nearly five full seconds faster than runner-up Sabrina Letwin of Lake Forest.
Thompson also delivered a solid finish in the 100-yard backstroke, earning second place in a time of 1:06.23. Her final time was less than a second behind winner Kelsie Miller of Lake Forest. The newcomer was also 16th out of 62 competitors in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in at 28.47 seconds.
Leach led the men's team with a victory in 1-meter diving. His score of 148.75 edged Principia's Connor Walton, who received a score of 148.65 to earn runner-up status. Leach also produced the Red Devils' top performance in a swimming event, earning eighth place out of 32 swimmers in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.69 seconds
Lake Forest swept the men's and women's team championships on Saturday. A total of 10 NCAA Division III schools from Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin competed in the event.
The Red Devils will be back in action next Saturday as part of the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational at 1 p.m. in Bloomington.
The swimming team opened the season with nine wins at Knox College Nov. 3.
