Eureka girls play in alumni game
The Eureka College women's basketball team hosted its third annual preseason Alumni Game on Sunday afternoon, welcoming a collection of former Red Devils back to campus for a scrimmage at the Reagan Center.
Nine former women's basketball players participated in the event, six of which played for third-year head coach Taren Martin. All-time Eureka leading scorer and 2005 graduate Jessica Reardon played for the alumni squad. The team also included athletics administrative assistant Kim Holdenrid (2003-07) and current assistant coach Khassandrae Brown (2010-12).
"Thank you to all the alumni that returned to play this year," Martin said. "It was great to see everyone again and have the current players meet everyone."
Eureka will open the 2012-13 season on Thurday, Nov. 15 at Knox at 6 p.m. in Galesburg. The Red Devils return 10 letterwinners and two starters from last season's squad that won 21 games and advanced to the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament championship game for the first time. Junior guard Caty Eeten (Eureka /Eureka H.S.) returns after earning last season's SLIAC Player of the Year award, while Martin was chosen as the SLIAC Coach of the Year.
"Our girls worked hard in the offseason and have continued to work hard in practices," Martin said. "I am anxious to see them put it together in games. The most important thing I have noticed about this team is the team chemistry. They are a very close group, and it's fun to coach a group like that."
"We worked really hard in our offseason," Eeten said. "We are going to be a completely different team from last year. We are all ready to start playing games and competing."
"We have a great group of 14 girls that have the passion and the heart," senior guard Jaylynn Stewart (Taylorville/Taylorville H.S./Illinois State) added after Sunday's scrimmage. "We have a 'no regrets' mentality".
