Eureka College women play on senior night
Eureka College senior forward Jaylynn Stewart (Taylorville/Taylorville H.S./Illinois State) compiled eight points, 11 rebounds and eight assists to fall just short of a triple-double, while senior guard Caty Eeten (Eureka/Eureka H.S.) went 5-for-5 from 3-point range en route to a game-high 24 points in the Red Devils 83-43 non-conference victory over Lincoln Christian on Senior Night, Feb. 13, at the Reagan Center. All 13 Red Devils scored at least two points in the victory.
Eureka (14-8) claimed a 9-7 lead on two free throws from senior forward Melissa Clements (Sheridan/Serena H.S./Illinois Valley) with 16:20 left in the opening half and never looked back.
The hosts ultimately closed the half on a 39-15 run, turning a one-possession lead into a 52-25 lead at intermission. The Red Devils led by as many as 30 points in the first 20 minutes after sophomore guard Taylor Muehlich (Tremont/Tremont H.S.) drilled a jumper for a 46-16 cushion with 4:51 to play before halftime.
The Red Devils' lead was never threatened after halftime. Eureka slowly added to its lead throughout the final 20 minutes, and a bucket from junior guard Kiley Bugaieski (Tremont/Tremont H.S.) with 2:59 left gave the hosts their largest lead, 83-41.
Stewart added four steals to her balanced effort. Eeten went 8-for-13 overall, 5-for-5 from long range and 3-for-4 from the foul line for her 24 points in only 23 minutes played. She now has 1,388 points for her career, passing Nicole Fisher (2004-08) for third place on Eureka's all-time scoring list. Eeten needs three more points to tie Jill McGinnis (1991-95) for second place and 96 points to break the all-time mark of 1,483 held by Jessica Reardon (2001-05).
Clements came off the bench for eight points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Senior guard Kourtney Ewald (Ottawa/Ottawa H.S./Illinois Valley), who also played her final collegiate home game Feb. 13, compiled eight points, two assists and two steals in 20 minutes off the bench.
Bugaieski scored nine points and knocked down a pair of 3-pointers to increase her career total to 56 and tie Mindy Whitehouse (1990-94) for sixth place on Eureka's all-time 3-pointer list.
All 13 players scored for the Red Devils, as EC owned a 43-0 advantage in bench points.
Eureka also turned 20 LCU turnovers into 27 points and outscored the Red Lions in the paint, 30-10. The Red Devils' 59 rebounds were a season-high.
Moriah Kirkpatrick netted 18 points for the Red Lions (8-12). Alicia Carson logged a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Tesia Snow played a game-high 38 minutes.
