Metamora girls basketball struggles at Galesburg

The 2012-13 Metamora girls basketball season got under way on the wrong foot.

During the Galesburg Tournament, the Redbird defense faltered during the two out of three games Metamora dropped.

The team opened the Galesburg Tournament with a 56-46 win over LeRoy.

The Redbirds jumped out to a 24-6 lead in the opening quarter and extended the lead to 34-19 at halftime.

Cassidy Ioerger took charge for Metamora and scored 16 points for the game.

LeRoy tried to mount a comeback in the second half but it was too little and too late.

During the game, Kyler Samp racked up 15 points for the Redbirds.

The win over LeRoy would prove to be the best offensive outing for the Redbirds during the tournament.

The team then fell to Alleman, 60-39, in the Galesburg Tournament Thursday as defensive lapses and an inability to find an offensive rhythm cost Metamora.

The Redbirds found themselves in a quick 14-7 hole after the opening quarter.

In the second frame, the team put up a better offensive showing but was still trailing at halftime, 30-21.

Metamora was outscored 30-18 in the second half and lost.

Ioerger again led the team in scoring, this time with 15 points.

The team then played Galesburg Friday and lost, 70-40, with another poor defensive performance.

Metamora fell behind, 16-9, after the opening quarter and Galesburg opened the lead to 38-18 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the offense began to find a rhythm and scored easier than any other quarter thanks to good communication and shot selection.

Galesburg, however, also had no trouble scoring and held a 59-33 lead heading into the final quarter.

In the final frame, Metamora put up its worst offensive series of the game and Galesburg cruised to the win.

Kyler Samper had 11 points for the team during the game, including three free throws.

The team next plays at 7 p.m. Nov. 27 at Bloomington.

The team then plays at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 30 in the opening home game of the season.
