Metamora girls basketball team struggles

Maybe it was the Thanksgiving turkey or just good play from the opponent but whatever the reason, Metamora's girls' basketball team looked sluggish Friday.

Metamora's girls basketball team fell to East Moline, 46-25, in the Galesburg Tournament Friday.

The team dropped into an early 27-16 hole in the first half due to defensive lapses that allowed East Moline plenty of time to set up its offense and wait for high percentage shots.

Cassidy Ioerger helped the Redbirds stay in the game by knocking down seven shots throughout the four quarters and Kristi Guzman got in on the action with five points.

In the second half, however, the Metamora offense fell ice cold and only managed nine points throughout 16 minutes of play.

East Moline suffered no such problem and sank shot after shot.

Metamora kept grinding in hopes of making a comeback but East Moline never took its foot off the gas and cruised to the win.

Throughout the game, the team had problems slowing down East Moline's offense at times, which lead to scoring runs for the opponent's favor.

Metamora's offense, while spurred on from smart passes from Kyler Samp that set teammates up with good looks at the hoop, could not play consistent enough to keep the team in the game.

The team next plays at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Canton.

The team begins play in the Mid-Illini Conference against East Peoria at 7 p.m. Dec. 7 at East Peoria.
