Cross country making strides

A meet at Detweiller and an invite in Galesburg resulted in wins and close wins for the Metamora cross country teams.

The Runnin’ Red first ran at Detweiller Park and then at the Galesburg Invitational with 13 other schools. 

At Detweiller Park

Running against Notre Dame and Elmwood-Brimfield, the girls came in second and the boys were able to pull through for first Sept. 3.

The girls finished with 35 team points to Notre Dames 20, but still came ahead of Elmwood-Brimfield at 78.

Leading the girls was Kaitlyn Benson in second place at 19:52. Bethany Spradlin wasn’t too far behind in sixth at 20:57.

Katie Kessler was third for the Lady Runnin’ Red in eighth overall at 21:24. Cassy Fitzgibbons was next in ninth at 21:29 and Lexi Grieves was on her heels at 21:31.

The Metamora boys took first with runners in the top four positions at 30 team points. Elmwood-Brimfield was second with 38 and Notre Dame finished third with 60.

Jake Gillum led the race for first at 16:12 with John Crotteau right behind in second at 16:27.

Matt Crotteau was fourth at 16:53 and Keaton McClure finished in 10th at 17:40. Rounding up for the Redbirds was Ryan Meyer in 13th at 17:55.

Galesburg Invitational

The Runnin’ Red then traveled to Galesburg Saturday. The girls team ran for second and the boys were tied for fourth at the end of the day.

The Lady Redbirds had a combined time at 1:45:38, five minutes behind first-place Dunlap.

Benson led Metamora to finish at 20:22.5 for eighth overall.

Kessler was next in 17th at 21:14.3 and Spradlin was right behind in 18th at 21:16.9.

In fourth for the Runnin’ Red was Fitzgibbons in 21st at 21:18.6 and Grieves was 22nd at 21:26.4.

The boy runners had close call with the other teams in the top five. The top five teams were separated by about 30 seconds in their total times.

Metamora tied for fourth with Sterling at 1:26:53. Rock Island Alleman won the invite at 1:26:29.

Leading the Metamora boys was Gillum in third overall at 16:20.2. 

John Crotteau was in 10th at 16:58.5 and Matt Crotteau followed in 20th at 17:18.8.

McClure finished in 32nd at 17:51 flat and Seth Gunter made strides for 47th at 18:24.9.

The Runnin’ Red will next compete in the First to the Finish Saturday back at Detweiller Park.

Metamora girls were able to run for 12th with Fitzgibbons at the lead out of 51 teams last year and the boys were fifth out of 52 teams.

The first heat will have a 10 a.m. start time.
