Morton and Washington football teams run into IHSA state quarterfinals
MORRIS — Seth Glatz and the Morton football team are blazing into the Class 5A state quarterfinals.
Thomas Borges and Mid-Illini Conference rival Washington are doing the same in Class 6A.
Morton's senior running back ran for 241 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Potters to a 28-24 victory over Morris (10-1) in a Class 5A second-round game Saturday.
Morton (9-2) advances to the quarterfinal round and will host Mahomet-Seymour (11-0), a second-round winner over Troy Triad (8-2).
Washington (9-2) defeated Big 12 Conference member Champaign Centennial 27-13 in a road second-round game — boosted by a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown runs by Borges, who finished with 241 rushing yards on 20 carries and three TDs.
The Panthers will host Crete-Monee (8-3) in next weekend's quarterfinals.
This is the ninth quarterfinal appearance for Washington under coach Darrell Crouch.
For Morton, this is the second quarterfinal appearance all-time. The Potters last made the round of 8 in the fall of 1997 under coach Hal Chiodo. The Potters lost that Class 4A quarterfinal to Pontiac, 26-12.
Glatz put Morton ahead for the last time with a 5-yard TD run with 7 minutes, 46 seconds remaining in the game. He also has 7- and 9-yard scores in the first half. Tyson Hart's 21-yard TD catch from Layne Kaufman put Morton ahead 21-17 in the third quarter.
Washington was holding a one-touchdown lead in the fourth quarter before Borges scored a pair of long TD runs to put the game away.
