Higher sectional ranking wanted for swim team

While the Metamora, Eureka and Roanoke-Benson swim team had a strong showing last year at sectionals, coach Shane “Lefty” Morrison is looking to improve.

Morrison said that the team finished sixth last year in sectionals, but he wants to move up and compete with the top teams of the sectional: Notre Dame, U-High and Richwoods.

Two swimmers that look like they could help the team move up in the rankings are a pair of freshmen.

“We’re a pretty solid team,” Morrison said. “We look better this year, especially with two new freshman: Meghan Kelley and Morgan Brockhouse. They’re definitely going to add a lot more speed and depth to our team.”

Kelley looks to swim the 200 IM and breaststroke, while Brockhouse will do 50 and 100 sprints. However, Morrison said that could all change once the season starts Saturday at Macomb.

The pair will help fill the gap left by last year’s graduating class.

“I lost about five or six seniors, but only two or three of them were on my sectional team,” he said.

Also returning to help the team in diving this year is Brooke Powell, the lone diver.

So far, Morrison said that the team is looking solid in all races, but said that the medley relay should be a strong point.

“Right now, I’m looking for our medley relay to be one of the best, but there’s a lot of competition between Richwoods and Notre Dame,” he said.

Fortunately for Morrison, he said he hasn’t had to work too much in getting the girls back into shape after last year.

“A lot of them have been keeping in shape throughout the summer,” he said. “Really, we’re just trying to start out hard. We haven’t had to warm up into it because they’re all in swimming shape.”

Before testing the team at sectionals this year, the team should have some good challenges at invites at Macomb, Bloomington and Richwoods, which features a lot of sectional teams.

Morrison’s also looking for a chance to take on U-High.

“In the past they’ve just blown us away,” he said. “But, for these guys it lets them know that’s what a team should work like. That’s what I inspire to be.”

When the season culminates at the sectionals, Morrison said that he always looks to, “see if all my hard work and their hard work really paid off.”

A golf outing for the boys and girls swim teams is planned for 1 p.m. Sept. 23 at Metamora Fields. The registration fee is $100 per player or $400 per team for the four-person scramble. The fee includes the green fees and cart, beverage tickets, dinner and gift bag. “We’re using those proceeds to buy brand new touchpads and a timing system,” Shane Morrison said. Registration forms for the outing are available on the Metamora Township High School website at http://mths.schoolfusion.us/. Registration will also be available the day of the outing, Morrison said.
