Redbird netters’ win sectional, compete at state
The Metamora varsity tennis team advanced two singles and one doubles team to the state tourney after a successful two days at the Dunlap sectional May 23-24.
Will Koehrsen and Mitchell Nguyen both qualified for state along with Trevor Lewandowski and Fletcher Koehrsen in the doubles.
At Dunlap, the boys easily earned first place with 29 points. Richwoods was in second at 18.
Will Koehrsen, No. 1 seed, worked his way to a first place finish after defeating all of his opponents in two sets. He met Victor Spolidorio of Dunlap for the second time this season and came out on top again, 6-2, 6-3, to advance to state.
Nguyen earned third at the sectional after a loss to Spolidorio but defeated his Notre Dame opponent in the last match of the tourney.
In the doubles, Fletcher Koehrsen and Ryan Willard received a No. 2 seed and were victorious in two matches before the before being defeated in the championship match.
Tyler Ngo and Nick Becker won their first match, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 but were defeated against their Pontiac opponent in the semifinal match.
At state, Will Koehrsen had a successful first day with three consecutive wins.
In the first round, Will was victorious, 6-4, 6-1, over his Hinsdale South Peter Alex of Hinsdale South. He then defeated Jason Koesler of Oswego, 6-3, 6-2 and in the third round defeated Nate Dell of Glenbard West in three sets, 0-6, 6-0, 6-1.
On Friday in the second round, Will was knocked out of the race for the championship after a 6-3, 6-0 loss to Brice Polender of Lake Forest. Will came back with two wins in the consolation bracket to finish the day.
In the consolation quarterfinals, Will was defeated, 6-4, 6-1, to end his run at the tourney.
Nguyen was able to compete in four matches before bowing out of the tourney.
In round one, Nguyen defeated Ryan Champlin of Lincoln-Way Central in three sets, 4-3, 6-1, 6-2. He then had another grueling three-set match with Ben Urshan of Centralia but was victorious, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.
In the last match of Thursday, Nguyen received his first loss to Jasper Koenen of St. Charles, 6-0, 6-2, to send him to the consolation rounds.
On Friday, Nguyen received a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Noah Read of Benet Academy to finish his time at state.
With Lewandowski and Fletcher paired up in the doubles, the two received a loss in their first match 6-0, 6-1, to their Glenbrook North opponents.
The two then came back in the first round of the consolation bracket with a 6-2, 6-0 win over the pair from LaSalle-Peru.
In the third round of consolation, Lewandowski and Fletcher fell to the Downers Grove pair in a three-set match, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3, to end their run in the tourney.
