Lady Redbirds pick up heat on the court

The Metamora girls varsity tennis team went 1-1 in its two first matches of the season.

The Lady  Redbirds fell to Normal Community Aug. 25 at home, 3-0 but came back for a Mid-Illini Conference win over host Washington Thursday, 6-1.

Each match came to a close early due to inclimate weather.

Two of the singles matches against Normal Community were not completed. In the doubles, Normal Community were able to round out two wins with shutouts.

“Normal Community, defending champs of the Normal sectional, brought a deep, experienced team to Metamora for a three singles, two doubles format,” coach Brad Boeker said.

Against Washington, the Lady Redbirs were able to pull through with wins except for in the No. 1 singles match.

“The match was held at Eureka College as Washington waits for its new eight-court facility to be completed. The Redbirds played 

well from top to bottom and beat the Panthers, 6-1,” Boeker said.

Metamora’s Mallika Patel battled through a three-set match against Washington’s Dara Megysei, but came up short, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.

Addison Freitag, Amanda Seaboch, Paige Kaufman, Delaney Seagroves and Olivia Messenger were all able to topple their Washington opponents in just two sets each.

In the only doubles match played, Freitag and Kaufman needed only two sets to defeat Washington’s doubles team, 6-3, 6-2. The No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches were not played.

The Lady Redbirds will travel to Springfield Saturday for a tournament hosted by Sacred Heart Griffin.
