The Metamora varsity girls tennis squad entered the .500 club in the Mid-Illini Conference after a win over Pekin Thursday, 5-4.

The Lady Redbirds last M-I victory was the league opener with Washington Aug. 28, 6-1. The match was called early due to weather.

“Against Pekin the three seniors on the team all contributed to the team victory. Paige Kaufman and Amanda Seaboch won in singles, and Mallika Patel, teaming with junior Delaney Segroves, won at No. 3 singles to give the Redbirds their crucial fifth point to clinch the match,” coach Brad Boeker said.

In the No. 1 singles position, Patel was shut out, 6-0, along with Addison Freitag in the No. 2 singles.

Kaufman earned a win in No. 3 singles, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.

Also winning in singles was Seaboch, 7-5, 6-4, and Lizzy Frantik, 7-5, 6-4.

Metamora received a loss in the No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 6-3, but regained ground with the No. 2 and 3 matches.

Freitag and Kaufman paired together for a 6-1, 7-5 win and Segroves stood by Patel for a win, 6-4, 6-4.

The Metamora fresh/soph team swept its competition, 9-0.

Hosting Notre Dame Thursday, the Lady Redbirds were almost shut out in singles matches, but a 6-1, 6-3 victory by Frantik in No. 6 singles kept the Irish at bay.

“Notre Dame came away with the victory on behind strong singles play. The Irish won five of six singles matches to wrap the dual match before doubles were played,” Boeker said.

The second victory for Metamora came in No. 2 singles with Freitag and Segroves paired together to fight through a grueling first set and get by in the second with too much damage, 7-6 (10), 6-2.
