Metamora wrestlers win five straight

The Metamora wrestling team hit a hot streak last week, picking up five straight with two home wins and three on the road.

Metamora 45, Pontiac 31

The Redbirds began the week with a 45-31 win over Pontiac in a non-conference matchup.

Sophomore Noah Fletcher began the evening with a 4-minute, 21-second pin in the 285-pound weight division.

The Redbirds then went on to seven straight matches, which proved to be all the cushion Metamora would need for a team win.

Senior Chase Arends (126) won on a 53-second pin, followed by junior Max Ward with a 1-minute, 2-second pin.

Junior Marcus Chanto (138) earned a 4-3 decision.

Freshman Mitchell Ohl (106), senior Ryan Brooks (113), sophomore Alec Meronk (120) and junior Reilly Inghilterra (145) each picked up a win by forfeit for the Redbirds.

Metamora 53, Peoria High 21

The Redbirds continued their winning ways on Friday with a 53-21 win over visiting Peoria High.

Senior Lucas Munter (145) opened the night for Metamora with a 1-minute, 52-second fall.

Freshman Chris Leanos (160) won on a fall after 5 minutes, 29 seconds on the mat. Senior Josh Bernius (170) earned a technical fall at 5 minutes, 48 seconds, and junior Aaron Zalar (182) earned a win at 6 minutes, 20 seconds.

Ohl and Brooks also picked up individual wins on falls at 1:58 and :35, respectively.

Arends won on a 12-10 decision, and Chanto won on a 5-3 decision.

Fletcher (220) earned the only pin for the Redbirds at 1 minute, 19 seconds.

Meronk picked up the Redbirds’ only win by forfeit.

Metamora 43, Morton 33

Metamora hit the road Saturday for the Eureka quadrangular, but it didn’t slow the Redbirds down, picking up a 43-33 win over Mid-Illini Conference rival Morton.

Munter opened up scoring for the Redbirds with a win by forfeit.

With the Redbirds down 24-6, Bernius picked up a win by forfeit to cut the lead in half.

Zalar earned a pin at 48 seconds to make it 24-18, and a 4-3 decision won by Metamora senior Jonmarc Raspberry (195) made it 24-21 Morton.

The Potters pulled ahead 32-21, but a Fletcher pin at 2:42 cut the lead to five.

Ohl’s win by forfeit and an 11-2 decision won by Brooks put Metamora in the lead.

Arends put the finishing touches on the match with a 31-second pin.

Metamora 45, Illini Bluffs 28

The Redbirds also took a 45-28 win over Glasford Illini Bluffs on Saturday.

Chanto picked up a 2-minute, 21-second pin to open up scoring, followed by Munter with a 1-minute, 28-second pin.

Illini Bluffs cut the lead to 12-9 with two straight wins, but a 6-3 decision won by Bernius gave the Redbirds a six-point cushion, up 15-9.

Zalar picked up a 3-minute, 29-second pin, followed by Raspberry with a 2-minute, 37-second pin to make it 27-9 Redbirds.

A win by forfeit for Fletcher gave the Redbirds a 33-9 lead, but Illini Bluffs narrowed the gap with their own win by forfeit.

Ohl earned a 1-minute, 37-second pin, followed by Brooks with a 1-minute, 45-second pin, enough for Metamora to take the win.

Metamora 52, Eureka 30

Metamora picked up its fifth win of the week with a 52-30 win over host Eureka on Saturday.

Munter opened up scoring for the Redbirds with a 1-minute, 49-second pin.

The Hornets pulled ahead 12-6, but Bernius won a 15-4 decision to narrow the gap.

Zalar earned a 2-minute, 37-second pin to put the Redbirds on top 16-12.

Senior Jacob Hirst (195) picked up a win by forfeit to increase Metamora’s lead to 22-12.

Eureka pulled ahead 24-22 on two straight pins, but Ohl put the Redbirds back on top with a win by forfeit.

Brooks increased the lead with a 1-minute, 20-second pin, followed by Meronk with a 52-second pin, putting the Redbirds up 40-24.

Eureka picked up another win on a 33-second pin. However, Ward followed with a 27-second pin to put the Redbirds up 46-30.

A win by forfeit for Chanto wrapped up the match for the Redbirds.

Metamora will host the Metamora Holiday Tourney at 9 a.m. Saturday.
