New low-fare airline ends metro Phoenix flights after 3 months. Here's what happened
Just three months after it arrived in the East Valley, the newly launched ultra-low-cost carrier Avelo Airlines is no longer serving Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. It added flights from the east Mesa airport to Burbank, California, on May 3.
"Avelo evaluated the potential for this route and did not see the customer demand to support flying between Phoenix and Burbank. The last flights to and from (Mesa) were on August 16," a spokesperson for the airline said via email.
Conceding that the route did not meet Avelo's expectations, the spokesperson said the airline was excited about the addition of other destinations to its network, including Las Vegas; St. George and Provo, Utah; Fort Collins, Colorado; and Monterey, California.
Avelo faced strong competition in metro Phoenix for its Mesa flights. American Airlines has added flights and capacity to its LA-area routes from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, and Frontier Airlines launched a Burbank route from Sky Harbor in mid-July.
