A Kansas City, Kan., man died over the weekend when the riding lawn mower he was using rolled over and landed on top of him.

Samuel Cousin Jr., 59, died Saturday when he was mowing a neighbor’s lawn.

Assistant Chief Craig Duke, the public information officer for the KCK Fire Department, said a neighbor noticed that he or she couldn’t hear the lawnmower running anymore and went outside to check. They found Cousin underneath the mower.

Cousin was apparently cutting the lawn of neighbor Mable Cofield, who lives on the 3500 block of N. 49th Drive. On Tuesday, Cofield was still shaken up by the incident.

“It was just a freak accident,” Cofield said. “I don’t know exactly how it happened. I wasn’t out there when it happened.”

By the time fire department crews arrived, Cousin was dead, Duke said. He said any investigation would be conducted by the KCK Police Department. KCKPD officials could not be reached for comment.

Duke said the yard Cousin was mowing had an incline, which may have contributed to the mower rollover.
